Vascular surgery is a sub-specialty of general surgery which deals with diseases of the vascular system (arteries and veins) usually via surgery. Vascular surgeons are trained in the diagnosis and management of diseases affecting all parts of the vascular system except that of the heart and brain. Cardiothoracic surgeons manage surgical disease of the heart and its vessels and neurosurgeons manage surgical disease of the vessels in the brain (e.g. intracranial aneurysms). Previously considered a field within general surgery, it is now considered a specialty in its own right. As a result the structure for training vascular surgeons has been changed from general surgery progressing to sub-specialization in vascular surgery to training in vascular surgery alone from start to finish.
