Studies demonstrate that each pound you carry on your body, over and above your ideal weight, costs you one year of your life, on avergage. So a man at his ideal weight for the first half of his life, and twenty pounds overweight for the second half of his life, all other factors being equal, on average will live ten years less than he otherwise would live. Since your years can be full of vitality, these ten years are a high price to pay for being overweight.
However, the pure number of pounds you weigh is not the whole story. The habits that number reflects mean much more than the number itself. If you starve yourself to your ideal weight, you will induce a state of malnutrition and decrease your vitality and longevity. A healthy ideal weight is achieved through healthy living, not through starvation diets.
Following is a list of factors which cause your weight to be what it is. If you want to achieve your ideal weight in a healthy way, become a warrior in these areas and I promise you, your weight will be at its ideal level within one year.
Selection of Food
Nothing is more important than your selection of food. The body is made for a balanced intake of protein and complex carbohydrate. Let the fat content be determined by whatever amount of fat comes with your other food sources.
A proper balance of protein to complex carbohydrate regulates your insulin/glucagon, and thus your eicosanoid hormone system. You can do so with no fat or some fat. Our culture is, mistakenly, fat phobic. Read carefully. Organically grown food. Ten parts carbohydrate to seven parts protein. Organically grown food. Ten parts carbohydrate to seven parts protein. Organically grown food. Ten parts carbohydrate to seven parts protein. Organically grown food. Got it?
Eating to suppress experience is ever so common. Stay in communication with your emotions. Experience the way you feel, and tell the truth about it. This is not advice to stay calm or stay happy. Simply be honest with yourself, and you will not have to put a mountain of food on your experience to suppress it.
"Regular" means at least, at least, at least twenty minutes of vigorous aerobics three times each week. Regular aerobic exercise keeps your metabolic rate at the perfect level, and this burns calories which otherwise would show up on your thighs and waist.
Keep your colon clean. See a colon therapist at least twice a year. As you grow older, you may need an herbal stimulant (aloe vera, for example) to maintain a transit time of no more than 24 hours. A transit time of more than 24 hours results in putrefaction of food in the colon with resulting toxic overload of the liver. This calls for more nutrients through the mechanism of increased hunger.
In the modern world, constant vigilance is required to guard against addictions. Any addiction you allow into your habits calls up its friends, including food addiction. Most food addictions involve sugar and fat with storage of these extra calories around the body. It is possible to be an overweight vegetarian. If you eat enough vegetables, you will be overweight. It is possible to be addicted to quantity of food and to stay overweight on "healthy" food. Addiction has an emotional basis, so the complete discussion of this topic includes the earlier information on balance of emotions.
Juice fasting resets the body’s entire biochemical makeup toward a normal condition. After a lifetime on a typical affluent western diet, fasting is an extremely valuable tool. If you fast one day out of every two weeks, you should not need longer fasts, although you may choose to have them for the clarity and euphoria you can achieve that way.
Simple sugars are so common in the typical diet that the best approach to handle the problem is simply to allow no simple sugars into your diet. Fortunately, you have a set of simple sugar detectors on your tongue. If it tastes sweet (with the exception of some chemicals you also should avoid), it contains simple sugars.
Smart people drive defensively, because everyone knows the location of the second most dangerous place in the world: the road. Few people know the location of the most dangerous place in the world: the food store. If you buy it, you probably will eat it. If it does not fit with what you know to be healthy food, do not buy it or allow it into your house. Do not use the excuse that you are buying it for your guests. Have enough respect for your guests not to offer them food items which damage their health. They can do that on their own time, if they must. Spend a minimum of time in restaurants and, when you do go there, order salads and vegetable dishes.
Water is the medium of biochemical exchange in the body; it is the river which the body uses to cleanse itself. Drink plenty of water. Eight ten-ounce glasses per day of steam distilled or carbon/reverse osmosis filtered water provides wonderful cleansing of the body. Thirst comes partially disguised as hunger, which makes some sense because the water content of food partially satisfies thirst. Consider yourself hungry only when your thirst is satisfied.
Partially digested food causes hunger to return before it should, resulting in bloating of the abdomen, putrefied food in the colon and excess food in the upper digestive tract. Pancreatic enzymes are an important component of digestion. Supplementation of your diet with digestive enzymes, in the form of raw food or the powder form of pancreatic extract, frees up enzymatic energy throughout the body which, among other things, burns fat.
It is important to be on good terms with your parents. If you are not on good terms with your parents, this condition unbalances all the other relationships in your life and, in turn, unbalances your emotions — resulting in anxiety and depression with compensatory overeating. Do your body a favor by honoring your mother and your father.
Although this is slightly controversial, I believe the use of high-quality nutritional supplements balances the nutritional needs of the body and quiets the fires of hunger for calories. However, do not waste your money on cheap supplements. There are several grades of supplements, and only the best will do in terms of bioavailability and bioactivity. The best costs more. What’s new?
Plain food contains abundant salt, and your body has the ability to retain the salt which it needs. The only reason to add salt to your food is for taste, and this is, in itself, an addiction. Salt retains extra water in the body, increasing weight, slowing down the cleansing process and elevating blood pressure. Throw your salt shaker away along with that container of salt in your kitchen cabinet. The exception to this is the person who has weak adrenal function and secondary low blood pressure. This person should add salt to his or her food, and the best salt to add is sea salt.
Suffice it to say, a good sex life decreases the craving for comfort foods.
Calorie restriction diets do not work. You may loose weight, but when you go off the diet you will gain it back plus more. Then it will be even more difficult to loose that weight than before.
If you are overweight, just remember that Rome was not built, or torn down, in a day. Follow the principles outlined above, and watch your weight fall gradually over the period of six months to a year to the ideal level. Slow weight loss is likely to be permanent weight loss, because it is based in good habits, not in crash programs.
The support of a doctor can be critically important in this process. I suggest that you select one who experienced in the practice of nutritional medicine.
