carbohydrates

Should you eat a high carbohydrate diet a week before an athletic running event to increase your performace?

Since I not planning such a run, no I should not. If you mean should you, it depends on the length of the run. Glycogen is how the body stores glucose and when glucose is being burned and not replenished, the liver breaks down glycogen to glucose to make up the difference. In marathons even well-trained athletes hit the wall at about mile 19. After that the liver is out of energy (all the glycogen is gone) and you are breaking down muscle for energy. First of all, I discourage you from running marathons, but if you insist on doing it, amino acids and honey shakes beginning at mile 10 would be your best bet. I consider the eating of lots of carbs before a race to be a waste of time. If it is a shorter race you are talking about, just train like heck - if you want to win that is.
