Mercury Detox Protocol

Thanks for the dialogue and information forum this board provides; it was an important factor in my ability to persevere in the face of dismissal of my problems by several (actually many) MDs until one caring physician actually listened to my symptoms, looked at my records and ordered a DMSA 24 hr urine toxic element test from Doctor's Data. Result - very elevated levels of mercury. Additionally, I also have high levels of cadmium from a previous hair analysis which had previously been discounted. Currently I am undergoing amalgam removal with a mercury free dentist. I also have a very interesting book: Amalgam Illnessgrinning smileyiagnosis and Treatment written by Andy Cutler who has a PhD in Chemistry from Princeton and personally experienced mercury poisoning from amalgams. Cutler advocates (I believe I have this correct) after amalgam removal, 50-100mg DMSA every 4 hrs on alternate weeks for aprox 3 months, then 50-100 DMSA plus 25-200 mg lipoic acid every 3-4 hrs for 3-4 days per week until urine mercury levels fall. Lipoic acid is to chelate mercury from the brain. This protocol gets the level of mercury down slowly with fewer mercury spike symptoms and (very important) keeps mercury moving away form the brain to the body pool for elimination. Your thoughts on Cutler's detox protocol? How does the addition of cadmium compound a mercury detox situation?

There are many protocols out there for this purpose. Some of them are so complex you would have to spend all your waking hours to follow them. To paraphrase A. Einstein: "The correct protocol for mercury removal should be as simple as possible, but not so simple that mercury is not chelated out of the body." (Actually he said the best theory is the simplest theory, but not so simple that it does not explain the facts.) I find that DMSA and chlorella do the job. The dose should be somewhere below that which gives symptoms and should be individualized. I see no reason to skip weeks, or even days if the dose is correct, although skipping is not detrimental to the overall result. DMSA crosses the blood brain barrier, so, I see no reason for adding Lipoic Acid, although LA (not the city) is great stuff. Chlorella is important as it binds mercury in the gut which has been chelated alnd left via the liver/gallbladder. Otherwise, a percentage will be reabsorbed. As to cadmium, it will also be chelated along with the mercury. If there is still some left on testing after mercury is gone, oral EDTA on an empty stomach is a better chelator for that metal.
