skin growths

I have on my neck small growths resembling the tip of a small worm protruding the skin. I notice that this is not rare, as i see them on friends, families, etc. What are they, whats the cause, and is there a way to rid of them? More importantly, what can be done to prevent the growth of new ones, as it appears that there is never just one.

Here is the standard line in nutritional medicine: these items are called "skin tags," said to be viral in origin and related to carbohydrate imbalance (hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia), easily removed by dermatologists and preventable through bringing sugar
metabolism into balance. I am not so sure that is the whole story or even part of the story. I had them before I took control of my health around 15 years ago and instituted a rigorous nutritional program. They dropped off and did not return and I was never hypoglycemic
or hyperglycemic. A couple have appeared and disappeared since then.
