essential mixed cryoglobulinemia

My 16 mo. old son has presented with "bluish" lips, arms and legs at various times during the past 4 weeks. He is not holding his breath, or crying. When this happens, his hands and feet are very cold (and bluish), even though it is not yet cold where we live, and our home temperature has been in the 60's. The episode lasts for no more than 7-10 min. His CBC is normal, as is his EKG. He did only gain 1/4 lb. at his last MD visit (20.5 lbs but excellent appetite). However, he is VERY active (no fatigue) and the cold extremities and low weight are his only symptoms. His hair and skin are all normal. His sleep patterns are unaffected (10-11 hrs/night, 2-3 hr nap daily). The CBC that was run was from a fingerstick and no values are available to check for anemia.

The “blue” aspect, if that is accurate, reflects poor oxygenation of the blood. There can be several possible causes, for example poisoning, also for example a septal defect in the heart, an arteriovenous shunt between large vessels, or cryoglobulinemia (as you suggest in the title of your posting), or possibly plain mineral deficiency. This is all guess-work. What he needs is to see a good doc and have proper testing.
