Complicated Grief

Complicated Grief

Dr. Kennedy
Complicated grief involves sadness over loss that is complicated by adjustment disorders (especially depressed and anxious mood or disturbed emotions and behavior), major depression, substance abuse, and post-traumatic stress disorder. It is defined by the extended length of time of the symptoms, the interference in normal function caused by the symptoms. While normal grief is self-limiting and clears up on its own, complicated grief can go on indefinitely and calls for intervention.
