Coccyx

Coccyx

Dr. Kennedy
The coccyx is the small tail-like bone at the bottom of the spine very near to the anus. The coccyx is made up of 3-5 rudimentary vertebrae which are fused in the embryonic stage of development. It is the lowest part of the spinal column. The word “coccyx” comes from the Greek kokkyx meaning “cuckoo bird” because it is thought to look like the bill of the cuckoo. Breaking the coccyx involves simply landing hard on the seat of one’s pants and this requires realignment and a period of healing which may be painful indeed, a condition known as coccydynia. (Doctor’s have a word for everything don’t they.)
