Breast Augmentation (Silicone Implants)

Breast Augmentation (Silicone Implants)

Dr. Kennedy
Breast augmentation involves the enlargement of the breasts by artificial means. Augmentation of the breast typically consists of insertion of a silicone bag (prosthesis) under the breast (submammary) or under the breast and chest muscle (subpectoral) and then filling the bag with saline (salt water). This prosthesis expands the breast area to give a fuller breast (increased cup size), give a better contour, and give more cleavage. The maker of these devices (Corning) was embroiled in law suits for years due to the fact that many of these patients became ill from what they believed to be Silicone Implant Disease. More recently the suits have been, I believe, settled and believe it our not, Corning has persuaded the FDA to once again permit the use of silicone gel in human beings. The alternative is the use of saline implants but these still come in hard siliconized bags.
