Is anaerobic exercise is more effective at increasing muscle mass than aerobic exercise and if so, why?

Anaerobic exercise increases mass due to the release of growth factors. This effect is stimulated by the induced presence of lactic acid and the drop in blood sugar which accompanies anaerobic exercise. I have heard that Arnold Schwarzenmuscle used to train by eating a very low carb diet and carried a bucket with him during his workouts. The story goes that he did not consider his workout complete until he had thrown up in the bucket from the induced hypoglycemia as this would result in a big release of growth hormone from the pituitary. I am not suggesting, by the way, that you (or anyone else) follow this technique of training.
