ulcerative colitis

I have ulcerative colitis. It took about 7 months to get it under control using Predsisone, Rowasa enemas, and Asacol. I found that the nicotine patch worked better than the Prednisone. The problem I am running into is at least once a month I get a flare up. Will this damage the colon? Do certain foods cause flare ups? Right now I take Asacol 400mg 3Xs a day, Rowasa enemas nightly, and 14 mg. nicotine patch. Is there anything else I could be doing to put me in remission longer?
