fasting and exhausted adrenals

A naturopath told me several years ago that I had exhausted adrenal glands and that I should never fast. (This was conversational, I was not in treatment with her.) I am going on a 2-3 day fast in several weeks and want to know how I can modify the fast to avoid harm. When I do not get enough protein in a day (usually a day of exertion), I wake up at night with chills and uncontrollable shaking. It subsides as soon as I eat a small amount of protein.

As you are not a person I have had the privilege to personally evaluate, I have no concrete advice for you about fasting. However, I can tell you that fasting is a stress on the body and if there are other stresses already, then the fast may deliver results you do not want. It might be wise to have your adrenals checked out before you begin a fast. The best test around is the 24 hour urine collection for analysis of all hormones. This info, in the hands of the right doctor, might lead to orthomolecular hormone replacement and greatly benefit your health. If that is the case, you may get the results you are looking for through fasting via hormone balancing.
