Menstrual weight gain

I am 49 years old and usually gain 2 to 4 lbs during my menstrual cycle each month. I recently asked my doctor for a suggestion to combat this as the additional water retention and weight gain is a problem. My doctor suggested that I take 600 mg. of NAC (2 capsules, 3 times daily) combined with vitamin B6 (2 capsules, 3 times daily). I started the regimen a couple of weeks ago and it has helped. Can I take this on a daily basis, not just during my menstrual cycle? I purchased B6 - 100 mg., however, my doctor did not specify the number of milligrams for the B6. What milligrams of B6 should I be taking? I'd like to continue the regimen, however, I want to make sure that I am not taking too much of either supplement. Is this regimen OK or do you have an alternate suggestion of dealing with the additional water weight?

You have a wonderful doctor. Don't lose that person. (I wonder why you are asking me and not your doc.) The great thing about nutritional medicine is the safety of the treatments. It is hard to overdose and you have to be very determined to do it. The usual dose of B6 is 100 to 200 mg. and you can take it daily if you wish. As to other suggestions, I can't advise you directly as you are not my patient, but in similar cases, I have recommended to be sure to have and carry out a sensible daily exercise program, drink plenty of distilled water (it's a great diuretic) and sleep at least eight hours per night.

This doctor is an urgent care doctor who is only in my area once a month. I went in for something else and asked him this question while I was there. This is why I don't have regular access to him, therefore, thought I would ask you. On the B6 is it ok to take 200 mg., 3 times per day with the NAC, which would actually be a total of 600 mg. per day or should I lower the B6 dosage altogether? I would like to continue to take this combination daily, not just during my menstrual cycle.

I cannot tell you it would be therapeutic to take such doses or that you personally should do it; however I can say that it is generally accepted as safe.
