Mecury Removal During Pregnancy

After I consulted a dentist who is specializing in amalgam removal for 10 amalgams to be removed, I found out that I am pregnant with my second child. I am 42 and had been experiencing fatigue and depression for many years. My dentist suggests that I go forward with the removal during my second trimester. I am not sure of the risk of additional mercury exposure to my fetus if I go ahead with the removal. My first child is bright but usually is impatient and has a hard time to concentrate at a task and has dust, mold, and food allergies. Knowing how many amalgams that I do have and I planned to breast-feed my baby after it is born; I need the best advice available.

While I am not advising you specifically as you are not my patient, but in general in this situation I advise prospective mothers to wait until the baby is finished breast feeding to deal with the mercury problem. The reasoning is that mercury (and other toxic heavy metals) are stored inside lipid cells and only small amounts are in blood, urine, or even milk at any given time. However, if stirred up by having the amalgams drilled out - the mercury sublimated and inhaled - then levels go up and can endanger the fetus/infant.
