DMSO is approved by the FDA for treatment of interstitial cystitis. The task of the FDA is to establish safety for use in humans. Given that FDA approved drugs result in the deaths of over 100,000 Americans each year, you have to wonder what actually may be their criteria. Nevertheless, once a drug is approved, each doctor may use it for whatever purpose he or she sees fit. This is called "off label" use. The half life of DMSO in the human body is 16 hours. That means that if ten units are present at hour zero, at 16 hours 5 units are present, at 32 hours 2.5 units are present, at 48 hour 1.25 units, and so on. The mechanism of action is thought to be detixification by its ability to put organic toxins in solution allowing them to be excreted more easily by the kidneys, liver, lungs, sweat glands, etc.
