Chronic Fatigue and Depression

Three years ago I found myself extremely depressed and suffering chronic fatigue. Being a runner some days I could run up a mountain whilst on others I didn't have enough energy to get out of bed and would sleep for 24 hours. A nutritionist advised me to go on a wheat, yeast and sugar free diet (all sugars-lactose, glucose, fructose etc). This worked and I regained my energy for about 18 months. But then it started deteriorating again and I developed breathing problems after eating any product containing sugar or corn. Within 24 hours my airways would start to close and breathing would become very difficult, accompanied with chronic fatigue and depression. Even though I try to be very careful with my diet, now rarely a week goes by when I do not suffer from chronic fatigue, anxiety, depression, and breathing problems. Plus I am now starting to have stomach acid type problems and am extremely concerned with the long term effects of my diet. Sleeping has also become a problem, waking most nights 3 or 4 times. I have started taking B12 recently which I feel has regained some of my energy. It is very difficuly avoiding sugars, I miss diary products and am limited to one piece of fruit a day. Have you ever heard of this type of reaction to sugars.

I admit that is a strange story and I would want to have a thorough evaluation before rendering an opinion or making any kind of recommendation. On the one hand it sounds like an allergy and on the other I find myself thinking about the hyperinsulinemia / adult onset diabetes continuum. Always, one wants to consider the health of the digestive sytem in diagnosing and treating any medical condition and sometimes it is not so obvious that there is a problem in that area.

My reaction to certain types of foods can appear quite distinctive. Any gluten product causes depression and anxiety, resulting in ucontrollable food cravings to escape the anxiety. Milk and cheese, i.e. lactose, makes me feel 'high' and spaced out followed by extreme headaches. Sugar causes the breathing problems as I have explained, plus food cravings. My sensitivity to corn seems to be very high. For 6 months last year I was constantly having trouble breathing even though my sugar intake was non-existent. Then I discovered that corn was involved in the cultivation of the xanthum gum I was using in my bread. Once I stopped using it I was fine. But if only life was that simply. There seems also to be many hidden elements in foods that no matter how careful I am bring my health down to a sub standard condition. Meat, in particular beef, is questionable, which I wonder whether is connected to the high use of steroids etc. What do you suggest should be the next move. I just feel like I'm being poisoned everyday. I live in Illinois. Is there someone in this state that you can recommend. I have tested negative to coeliac and lactose intolerance.

Now your description has me thinking about the possibility of leaky gut syndrome. The usual causes of leaky gut are, in order of importance: mercury toxicity, long-term use of antibiotics, unending stress, long term overuse of coffee and/or alcohol. If this is the case, it sounds as if the leaky gut is a continuing problem which may mean that the provoking cause is still going on. And again, IF this is the problem, the provoking cause must be removed, the gut leaking stopped, and then therapy really begins. Almost always a leaking gut produces a chronic gut wall infection which does not clear up when the gut stops leaking but must then be treated with the SanPharma remedies. It would be easy enough to find someone in Illinois who could order the right tests to diagnose the problem, but use of the SanPharmas is rare in America as they are German remedies which have been allowed into the U.S. for only a few years. Few people are familiar with their correct use. Even people who use them do not necessarily use them correctly. If one is going to have such a problem as the one I think you may have, one hopes to be a citizen of Germany. Of course, that has some disadvantages of its own like having to speak German all the time. OK, I stop with the stand-up. I will email a list of docs in Illinois to you, but I am not hopeful that any one of them can both diagnose and correctly treat the problem.
