complete hair loss (Alopecia Universalis)

After four years illness I have been diagnosed with polyglandular autoimmune disease. Initially my pituitary stopped functioning, two years later my joints were attacked, four months ago all my hair fell out. After being diagnosed with alopecia universalis the hospital consultant said that there is a less than 50% chance that my hair will grow back again. I have seen a private trichologist who also diagnosed alopecia universalis and said that with treatment he could restore my hair over a matter of months. Is this possible?

Universal hair loss is not uncommon. Regaining hair in that circumstance is not uncommon either. This is almost surely due to an unidentified toxin and probably from the GI tract. It is very probable that your hair follicles are not dead but merely unable to support hair at this time. That is about as much as I can say without a direct examination. I don't think anyone should make absolute promises in such cases as this may raise false hopes. There are now potent treatments fo stimulate hair growth. Minoxidil (Rogaine) is one and concentrated activated topical vitamin preparations is another.
