dead teeth

While having all my mercury fillings removed, my dentist discovered several dead teeth. She recommended that I have root canals (which is out of the question) or that I have them crowned and wait to see if they bother me. Another dentist suggested I have them extracted. He believes a dead tooth is like a dead organ, and should not remain in the body. I would appreciate your opinion.

My opinion falls on the side of the second opinion above. I can't think of any other organ in the body which, if it dies, any responsible doctor would recommend leaving in.
