A basketball and I were involved in a scuffle sending me crashing down, full weight onto my shin. There is swelling along the shin where I contacted the ground with heavy bruising surrounding the swelling; the bruising started a couple days after the injury, but the bruised areas are free of pain. The only time there is pain is when the leg is lowered to the ground when I sit, even standing is more comfortable than sitting. I am having a hard time getting a straight answer on to whether to place heat or cold on the swelling, with everyone having a different opinion. Is there anything other than OTC drugs I can take to take care of the swelling or is the swelling an important part of healing? Is the bruising normal days after injury, it seems to be collecting at the surface in certain spots. Im trying not to take ibuprofen and acetominophen.

Cold first 24 hours to control swelling; hot thereafter to speed healing. You want to be sure you do not have a fracture; consider having an x-ray exam. There are homeopathics which help resolve swelling, but you gotta find a doc who can give them to you. Bruising is bleeding under the skin, of course, and what you are probably seeing is migration of the blood under the skin over time. Eventually your macrophages will clear all the old blood out.
