I am 43 and believe I have been going thru perimenopuase for almost two years. Been to numerous docs all the "ologists" and so many test and nothing could be found; biggest symptoms are vertigo, mood swings, hot flashes, PMS, irregular periods, to name a few. I am trying to muddle through with natural remedies but don't understand the estrogen/progesterone connection and wondering if a cream with both would be a good idea. No doctor will do the hormone test and they say it is unreliable, but offered me something called Premarin (derived from horses' urine) but a lot of cancer in my family and since I am not part horse don't want this and don't like the one size fits all approach. Comments?

The trick here is finding the right doctor. There are plenty of docs out there who are totally uninformed about hormone replacement therapy using orthomolecular human hormones. The lab tests are accurate, but the doc must know which tests to order and how to interpret the results. This is not something taught in med school. Use the Find A Doctor function in the upper left.

Why use Premarin which contains horse hormones along with some human estrogen? I definitely suggest using natural HUMAN hormones, namely Estriol, Estradiol and Estrone as well as Progesterone. With the cancer in your family it may be prudent to use only Estriol and Progesterone as both of these seem to counteract the cancer promoting effects of Estradiol and Estrone while allowing you to reap the benefits of hormone replacement. Compounding pharmacists can work with you and your physician (including educating your physician about natural hormone replacement) to solve any hormone related problems you experience.
