Peeling Fingers

I have seen several cases of peeling of the top layers of skin on the fingers, and sometimes the palms. The condition seems to go away after a few weeks, then reappear at another date for about the same period of time. Any hints on what it might be, and how best to work with it?

I have heard of this happening with mercury toxicity. Dental amalgams are the most common source of mercury in the human body.
