Dr. Kennedy The word "callus" has two meanings: (1) A callus or callosity is a localized firm thickening of the upper layer of skin as a result of repetitive friction. A callus on the skin of the foot becomes thick and hard from rubbing (as a result of repetitive friction). (2) A callus is also the word applied to hard new bone substance that forms in an area of bone fracture. It is part of the bone repair process.
