Bradycardia (Slow Heart Rate) Print E-mail

Dr. Kennedy Bradycardia refers to a slower than normal heart rate, usually defined as less than 60 beats per minute. Athletes typically have bradycardia due to conditioning of the heart allowing the heart to pump adequate blood with less beats. Heart rates of as low as 28 per minute have been recorded. Bradycardia in the absence of athletic conditioning reflects an energy production deficit which can be due to a variety of conditions. The word bradycardia is logically derived from two Greek roots: brady, slow + cardia, heart = slow heart.
