Dr. Kennedy Baker's cyst, named after the person who first described it, Dr. William Morrant Baker (1839-1896), is a swelling in the space behind the knee (the popliteal space) composed of a membrane-lined sac filled with synovial fluid (the lubricant for the joints) that has escaped from the joint. Baker's cyst is also called a synovial cyst of the popliteal space.
