Ferulic Acid Print E-mail
by Ron Kennedy, M.D., Santa Rosa, CA

Dr. Kennedy Ferulic acid is an antioxidant (and therfore neutralizes free radicals such as superoxide, nitric oxide and hydroxyl radicals). These free radicals can cause oxidative damage of cell membranes and DNA. Ferulic acid also helps to prevent damage to cells caused by ultraviolet light and exposure to ultraviolet light actually increases the antioxidant potency of ferulic acid. Studies have shown that ferulic acid can decrease blood glucose levels and can be helpful in the control of diabetes. Ferulic acid helps protect against cancer, bone degeneration, menopausal symptoms (especially hot flashes). It also reduces the level of cholesterol and triglyceride, thereby reducing the risk of hearth disease. Ferulic acid seems to reduce the risk of many cancers, including cancer of the stomach, prostate, colon, breast, liver, lung and tongue.
