High Blood Pressure, The Silent Killer Print E-mail

Dr. Kennedy Hypertension continues to be the almost unnoticed killer of Americans. I am stunned not only that there are so many people with high blood pressure going untreated, but also that most of the people being treated are severely under-treated. Folks seem not to understand that hypertension wears out the vascular system and takes 10-20 years off a person's life span. Vascular disease takes 2/3 of all American lives. Need I say more?

Doctors seem to think that all they have to do is prescribe a pill and forget it. Hypertension should be not only treated but treated aggressively. If it can be handled by natural means, great, but if not meds must be used and used at a level which gets the job done.

Young people seem to think they can ignore their high blood pressure because they are young and here is what I have learned: every single person confronted with evidence of this disease HAS AN EXCUSE. This or that or the other thing causes the problem and really nothing to worry about. Yeah right, but the explanation does not erase the damage done by the disease. OK, enough said. Your health is in your hands. As doctor I can only yell "FIRE!" You have to beat it out of the theater.
