Dr. Kennedy Nephrology is the study and treatment of kidney disease and is a branch of IUnternal Medicine and Pediatrics. Nephrology is concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of kidney diseases including electrolyte disturbances and hypertension, and the care of those requiring kidney replacement therapy, including dialysis and kidney transplant. Many diseases affecting the kidneys are systemic disorders, and require not only a whole patient approach, but also special treatment, such as autoimmune diseases, for example lupus. A nephrologist is a physician who has been trained in the diagnosis and treatment of kidney disease. Important aspects of treatment include regulation of blood pressure, electrolyte balance, balancing fluids in the body, and kidney dialysis. Knowledge of internal medicine is required to obtain certification as a nephrologist and requires many years of school and training. Nephrologists also must be approved by the Nephrology Board. To be certified, the physician must fulfill the requirements for education and training in nephrology to be eligible to take the board exams. Typically, nephrologists also need two to three years of training in an program in nephrology. Once training is satisfactorily completed, the physician is eligible to take the ABIM nephrology examination. Only pediatric trained physicians are able to train in Pediatric Nephrology. Internal Medicine trained physicians may enter general (adult) nephrology fellowships.

Patients who are treated by nephrologists typicall have one of hte following conditions:

  • Acute renal failure
  • Hematuria (blood loss in the urine)
  • Proteinuria (loss of protein especially albumin in the urine)
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Kidney stones
  • Chronic or recurrent urinary tract infections
  • Hypertension that has failed to respond to anti-hypertensive medication or could have a secondary cause
  • Electrolyte disorders or acid/base imbalance
