Chemosis is swelling around the iris (the colored circle that surrounds the pupil) due to edema (swelling) of the bulbar conjunctiva (the clear membrane that coats the outer surface of the eye). The outer surface covering appears to have fluid in it. Often, the conjunctiva become so swollen that the eyes cannot close properly.
