Amusia refers to a number of disorders which are united by the inability to recognize musical tones or rhythms and/or the inability to reproduce them. Amusia can be congenital or acquired sometime later in life as from, for example, brain damage. The term “amusia” is composed of a- + -musia which means the lack of music. Recent research suggests the human brain has neural networks specifically for processing music. Amusia is, at the most basic level, thought to be a deficiency in fine-grained perception of pitch.
